Bickerton Hill Campsite Hire: the Scout HQ and Campsite on Goldford Lane, Bickerton, Cheshire, SY14 8LN is the scouting home of the 200 young members of 1st Sandstone Scout Group and Wildfire Explorers, and is available for hire for daytime activities or overnight camping by Scouts, Guides and other organisations.
Bickerton Hill Campsite & Scout HQ
The Hut is a simple wooden ex-Army hut with a small entrance porch, main hall, kitchen, and a shower and 3 toilets. It stands in 4 acres of private grounds of which about 2.5 acres is woodland, the whole site being enclosed by a fence. There is parking for up to 8 cars on one side of the Hut and a (more or less) level grassed activity/play area on the other side. A kissing gate at the rear of the woodland gives direct access to Bickerton Hill, a sandstone ridge of wood and heathland including an area designated an SSSI, most of which is under the care of the National Trust. There are, therefore, endless opportunities for outdoor activities in the immediate area. The Sandstone Trail long distance footpath runs across Bickerton Hill a few hundred yards away providing mainly off road walking access to more distant areas.
There is a 6 lane air rifle shooting range (6m and 10m) in a small quarry in the private woodland. This must be booked if required. Visitors should bring their own air rifles (.177″ with firing pressure not exceeding 12ft/lbs), pellets and 17cm paper targets. It may be possible to provide rifles and an instructor for an additional charge subject to availability. Note that the range cannot be used unless the woodland area is placed out of bounds but when this is done the area around the Hut may still be used without restriction.
It is possible to erect 3 or 4 Icelandic Patrol tents or about 10 lightweight (2 – 4 person) tents in the grounds and still leave a substantial playing area. If cars are parked on the roadside verge outside the gate this can be increased substantially.
Mobile reception (including 4G data) on the EE network is good, but patchy on other networks.
Tents, cookers and other camping equipment can be hired if required and Nights Away and Shooting Permit Holders may be available if required.
