Summer Camp 2020 for Explorers & Scouts

Saturday 18 July to Saturday 25 July 2020.

We will be basewd at the Cartmel Lodge at Great Tower Scout Activity Centre

Close to the shore of Lake Windermere in the heart of the Lake District National Park, Great Tower Scout Activity Centre is an ideal base for exploring this famous area. Set in 250 acres, the centre offers both sizeable woodland to explore as well as natural rocky crags for climbing.

Our aim has been to organise those activities which the young people attending in 2019 said they would or wouldn't like to do. The draft programme is (click on underlined activities for more info):

Saturday 18 July Travel and settle in
Sunday 19 July Sailing on Windermere (1/2 day), Paddleboarding (1/4 day), Bell Boating (1/4 day)
Monday 20 July Crag climbing (1/2 day), Tag archery (1/2 day)
Tuesday 21 July Fell walking (full day with picnic lunch) (nothing over 500m!)
Wednesday 22 July Ghyll Scrambling (1/2 day), Kayaking on Coniston (1/2 day)
Thursday 23 July Mountain biking at Whinlatter Forest (1/2 day), Swimming Pool in Keswick (1/4 day)
Friday 24 July High/Low ropes & Zip Wire at Brockhole (Ambleside) 1/2 day, Wray Castle (by ferry) (1/2 day)
Saturday 25 July Clean up and travel

We will travel by minibus and cars, departing Bickerton at 12:00 on Saturday 18 July and arriving at the Centre late afternoon. On 25 July we will depart at about 11:00 (once everywhere has been cleaned and handed back) and be back at Bickerton at about 15:00.

We will be based at the Cartmel Lodge, a modern chalet type building on the Great Tower site which has 4 and 6 person buk bed rooms. There will be an opportunity for those who wish to do so to sleep in tents if, for instance, they need a few nights camping to qualify for a Chief Scout or Queen's Scout Award.

All Explorers and Scouts in Year 7 or above are eligible to attend but priority will be given in order of age (as older Explorers and Scouts will have less opportunity to attend in the future).

The trip will be run in strict accordance with Scout Association safety and child safeguarding rules. Great Tower provides a safe environment. It is run by fully qualified staff and all activities will be run by qualified instructors. Off site activities are run by reputable providers who we have used before and who we know run a reliable and safe operation fully in accordance with current regulations and licences.

The camp will cost £450 and help is available for those who would be prevented from attending solely because of the cost. A non refundable deposit is required by 31 October 2019 to secure a place with a further £50 falling due by the last day of each month from November 2019 ro June 2020.
