An further opportunity for Sandstone Scouts & Wildfire Explorers to go caving on

Tuesday 29 October 2019

These events are led specially for us by Alan Brentnall, for many years the Training Officer for Crewe Climbing and Potholing Club (CCPC) and still a qualified LCMLA Cave Leader.

CCPC will provide helmets, lamps and lamp-belts. 1st Sandstone will provide overalls (chest size 34" and 36" only). Scouts will need to wear old warm clothes (not jeans or cotton T shirts - fleeces, wool, track suit bottoms are all fine), overalls and wellingtons. They should bring a complete change of clothes for afterwards (it is most unlikely they will come out clean and dry!) - each Scout will be given a bin bag into which to deposit all wet and dirty clothes/shoes for the trip home.

The venue for this trip will be the Ashford Black Marble Mine near Ashford in Derbyshire, also known as the 'Rookery Mine'. Further information on Derbyshire Black Marble can be found here.

In addition to a Sandstone Scout Leader and Alan Brentnall we are accompanied by at least 2 very experienced cavers, most of whom are LMCLA trained and working towards their LMCLA qualification. This gives us a 2:1 or 3:1 adult/young person ratio underground. In addition one Sandstone Scout Leader remains above ground.

We will meet at the Scout Hut and leave by minibus at 8:00 am sharp. We will be caving (including the walk in) for 2 - 3 hours.

In order to make the travelling time worthwhile and to avoid hitting any large towns during the rush hour we will be completing a Treasure Trail around the village of Ashton in the Water before we set off on the return journey. If we complete it we will be entered for a £100 prize draw!

We will aim to be back in the home area no later than 8.00 pm but may be earlier - we will send a text to the main contact on the Consent Form when we are 1 hour away from the Scout Hut.

Scouts need to bring a packed lunch/drink (to eat on exit from the caves). Snacks can be taken into the cave. Those which they take into the caves should be tucked into pockets and NOT carried in a rucksack. Please see below for further information.

We should have time to stop at a McDonalds en route each way - Scouts may wish to bring money to buy a drinks/snacks/breakfast/tea. Please note that Alan Brentnall advises eating a good breakfast, either at home or at MacDonalds!

Note: we will arrange further caving trips; to qualify for the Caving badge Scouts need to attend 4 caving trips.
